HIPERION

CTA took part on HIPERION project focused on the knowledge and capabilities creation related to new space technologies and future planetary missions. The main task developed by CTA was focused on the simulation of pyroshock testing.

This test is a long and expensive trial and error process which can sometimes result in an unexpected delay on the qualification procedure of a space component. Therefore, being capable of numerically simulating these tests would suppose a cost and time reduction in the space component development and enhance competitiveness on the companies which resort to it.

Moreover, CTA has enhanced its pyroshock testing capabilities by the development of a new shock test bench. This new test bench will allow CTA to perform shock test on microsatellites and increase the maximum test level on standard size components.

HIPERION project is a project funded by the Basque Government in the ELKARTEK 2021 call for collaborative fundamental research projects.

ORBIT- “Aerodynamic Rigs for VHBR IP Turbine”

CTA has successfully completed the activities of ORBIT project, providing innovative experimental capabilities to explore and understand the enabler technologies associated to the challenges of the new engine architectures.

ORBIT project, as part of Clean Sky 2 programme, targets the environmental and competitiveness challenge of the European aeronautics sector, by addressing the topic of experimental validation rig testing to develop aerodynamic and acoustic technologies for the multi-stage IP turbine of the Rolls-Royce UltraFan® engine concept.

This engine represents a new era in aeronautic engine design, based on a new engine architecture, designed to significantly reduce CO2, NOx and Noise emissions, and to take a significant step towards meeting the European aero travelling requirements set by the EU’s Horizon 2020 plan.

The advancement of multi-stage IP Turbine technologies, as an important contributor to the UltraFan® engine concept, will participate significantly to the global objectives from Clean Sky2, which aim towards achievement of ACARE flight-path 2050 ambitious goals about CO2, NOx and Noise emissions.

To guarantee the success of  ORBIT project, it has been required to develop European world-class test capability that includes the acquisition of testing and measurement technologies. CTA has developed all the tasks to permit the experimental validation of relevant aerodynamic technologies, including the test of innovative geometries to assess the improved losses and reduction in the generated noise.

The results of the demonstration test campaigns have been used to validate aerodynamic and aeroacoustic technologies related to the rear stages of the IP Turbine, up to Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL4).

ORBIT project represents a significant milestone in the development of the aeronautic engine of the future, that will contribute to achieve European engine industry competitiveness objectives by developing enabling technologies towards cleaner and quieter aircraft according to the Flightpath 2050 goals.

HEGAZKIN II

2022 urtean zehar, CTA Teknologi zentroak H2e-gazkin II proiektua garatzen ari, Arabako Foru Aldundiarekin (AFA) sinatutako lankidetza-hitzarmenaren barruan. Bidaiarien garraioaren deskarbonizazio-prozesuan funtsezko eginkizuna izango duten zero isuriko hegazkin berriak izango dira proiektuaren ardatza.

Hidrogenoa erregai alternatibo gisa erabiltzeko aurre egin behar zaien erronkei erantzuna ematea da proiektuaren helburu nagusia.

Ildo horretan, teknologia berriak merkaturatzeko instalazioek bete behar dituzten segurtasun-neurriak eta simulazio-tresnek garapen teknologikoak azkartzeko eskaintzen dituzten aukerak aztertu dira.

During 2022 CTA has been working in the project H2e-gazkin II under the agreement with Diputación Foral de Álava (DFA). This project is framed under the new zero emissions aircrafts market which will have a big role to play in the decarbonization process of passenger transport.

CTA has focused on the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel and the challenges faced by the industry for its implementation and introduction.

In this sense, H2e-gazkin II  project has enable a comprehensive analysis of  the safety aspects that test facilities must comply for the validation of new technologies and the opportunities offered by simulation tools in order to accelerate the required technological developments.
