SPACECAP 2020

CTA has signed recently the collaboration contract with Diputación Foral de Álava with the aim of continuing with the development strategy of space technology that CTA has been doing in the last years within SPACEPAP: Desarrollo de Tecnologías Espaciales project.

The space sector is in constant evolution. The emergence of new start-ups with innovative ideas for guarantee an accessible access to the space, has affected all the aspects of the classical space industry, creating new services and products. This is known as NewSpace.

In order to give service to the new companies grown up in this sector and to fulfil with the new requirements, during the development of SPACECAP 2020 project, CTA has the objective of increasing its capacities to give answer to these new requirements and specific testing methods.

Actividades SMAR3NAK 2020

SMAR3NAK

The members of the SMAR3NAK project (CTA, UPV-EHU, Tecnalia and Mondragon University) are working during this year 2020 on the final advances of the different work packages (“New Architectures”, “Monitoring and Post-processing of Data” and “Control and Wireless Communication”). During the second half of the annuity, these technologies will be integrated into the “Technology Demonstrator” work package.

CTA, Tecnalia and UPV-EHU’s researchers met last July at CTA’s facilities, fulfilling the preventive security measures against Covid-19, to perform several tests aimed at validating new sensors. To do so, four-point bending tests and hammer impact tests were carried out to characterize statically and dynamically piezoresistive sensors, piezoelectric sensors, and fiber optic sensors.

The strain measurements obtained in the four-point bending test were used to evaluate the performance of each sensor. Strain gauge measurements were taken as a benchmark for the new sensors. Additionally, a finite element calculation was performed in ANSYS to compare the results obtained and verify that the tests have been properly performed. In the hammer impact test, the specimen was fixed at one end and free at the other. It was instrumented with a strain gauge, an accelerometer, and a fiber optic sensor. Once the test was performed, the data obtained from each sensor was processed and the natural frequencies of the system were obtained. Those natural frequencies were compared with the theorical values of a cantilever beam, obtaining very similar values. It can be concluded that both tests were satisfactory.

FASE FINAL EN EL DESARROLLO DEL PROYECTO MANTRA (RETOS-COLABORACIÓN 2017) /
FINAL STAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MANTRA PROJECT (RETOS-COLABORACIÓN 2017)

The project “MANTRA: SISTEMA INTELIGENTE DE MANTENIMIENTO PREDICTIVO MEDIANTE TERMOGRAFIA Y REALIDAD AUMENTADA”, financed within the call for RETOS COLABORACIÓN 2017 of the MINISTRY OF ECONOMY AND COMPETITIVENESS, enters its final stage (https://mantraretos.com/).

The most recent activities carried out by CTA have focused on the development of a failure prediction model that makes it possible to automatically identify and classify errors and abnormal operating states that occur in the inspected equipment. This technology is based on supervised Machine Learning techniques applied to the data captured by a thermographic sensor that visualizes the operation of the equipment itself.

The results of the study have led to the development of a predictive model that guarantees a failure accuracy greater than 90%, with a reduced computational cost that allows its application in real time. The next step in the final stage of the project will consist of the implementation of the prediction module together with the rest of the modules that make up the MANTRA predictive maintenance system.
